Six-color Canon PIXMA Pro printers are built for photo-quality output, and the secret to their smooth gradients and lifelike skin tones is the addition of two extra ink tanks: light cyan and light magenta. These lighter inks handle the subtle mid-tones and highlight areas that pure cyan and magenta are too saturated to reproduce cleanly. The problem is that a standard four-color CMYK test page will not catch a failing light-ink tank — the colors simply look slightly off rather than obviously wrong, and most people assume it is a camera or settings issue rather than a printer problem. This guide shows you how to isolate and diagnose your light inks properly so you are not wasting expensive photo paper chasing a ghost.
Why Light Cyan and Light Magenta Actually Matter
On a standard four-color inkjet printer, smooth gradients are created by printing tiny dots spaced far apart — the paper white between the dots creates the illusion of a lighter tone. It works acceptably for documents and graphics, but it falls apart on photographic prints, where you can see the individual dots in pale skin tones, clear skies, and delicate highlights.
Canon's six-color PIXMA Pro system solves this by using a diluted version of cyan and magenta for those lighter tonal regions. Instead of spacing out saturated cyan dots, the printer lays down closely packed light cyan dots — the result is a genuinely smooth, continuous-looking tone that holds up even when you examine the print closely.
When one of these light-ink tanks clogs or runs empty, the effect on photos is immediately visible — but often misdiagnosed:
- Skin tones look harsh, grainy, or oddly magenta-shifted
- Blue skies develop a rough, posterized texture instead of a smooth fade
- Pale fabrics and light backgrounds look gritty or over-saturated
- The overall print looks correct at a distance but falls apart up close
None of these symptoms will show up clearly on a standard CMYK test page, which is why you need a dedicated light-ink diagnostic.
Run the Right Diagnostic Test First
The first step is to confirm which specific ink channel is failing. Do not guess and do not start running cleaning cycles blind — photo printer cleaning cycles use a noticeable amount of expensive ink, so you want to target the right channel from the start.

Print the six-color test page first. If all bars look solid and uniform, the ink channels are healthy and the issue is likely a profile or settings problem rather than a hardware fault. If one bar is streaky, faded, or missing entirely, you have found your culprit.
Run a Nozzle Check and Cleaning Cycle
Canon's own nozzle check pattern is also worth running alongside our test pages — it gives you a more granular view of exactly which nozzle rows within a channel are blocked. You can access it in one of two ways:
- From the printer control panel: Go to Settings → Maintenance → Print Nozzle Check Pattern. The exact menu path varies slightly between PIXMA Pro models, but Maintenance is always where Canon puts it.
- From Canon's print driver on Windows or Mac: Open the printer properties dialog, go to the Maintenance tab, and select Print Nozzle Check Pattern.
If the nozzle check confirms blockages in the light cyan or light magenta rows, run a Cleaning cycle (not Deep Cleaning — save that for persistent cases) through the same Maintenance menu. After the cycle completes, print our 6-Color Test Page again to check the result.
If one cleaning cycle does not fully clear the problem, run a second. Do not run more than two or three cycles in a single session — let the printer rest for at least 30 minutes between attempts. Deep Cleaning uses significantly more ink than a standard cycle and should only be used if two standard cleanings have produced no improvement at all.
What a Failing Light Ink Does to Your Photos
To understand why this matters in practice, it helps to see the difference side by side. The impact of a missing light ink is subtle enough that it is easy to blame on image editing or paper choice — until you know what to look for.
The areas most visibly affected by a missing light ink are:
- Skin highlights and pale complexions — light magenta handles the delicate pink tones in bright skin areas; without it, highlights look grey or washed out
- Clear skies and shallow water — light cyan carries the upper tonal range of blue gradients; a missing Lc channel turns a smooth sky into a visible pattern of dots
- White fabrics and near-white backgrounds — both light inks contribute to neutral-looking whites; without them, whites can shift towards an unnatural warmth or coolness

Check Ink Levels and Know When to Replace
Canon PIXMA Pro printers report individual ink levels through the Canon IJ Status Monitor on Windows, the Canon IJ Printer Utility on Mac, or directly on the printer's LCD panel under Settings → Ink Information. Check the light cyan and light magenta tanks specifically — they are often labeled PC (Photo Cyan) and PM (Photo Magenta) in Canon's own interface.
If a tank is critically low, replace it before running any further cleaning cycles. Running a cleaning cycle on a near-empty tank can permanently damage the printhead by running the nozzles dry under suction pressure.
If ink levels look fine but the blockage will not clear after three cleaning cycles and a manual rest period, the nozzles in that channel may be permanently blocked from dried ink — particularly common if the printer has sat unused for several weeks. At that point your options are:
- Replace the affected ink tank: On many PIXMA Pro models, the printhead is integrated into the printer body and the tanks are separate. A fresh genuine Canon tank ensures you are not working with degraded ink, and sometimes the pressure from a new full tank is enough to push through a partial blockage.
- Replace the printhead unit: Canon PIXMA Pro models typically have a user-replaceable printhead assembly. If the blockage is confirmed as permanent after exhausting the cleaning options, a new Canon printhead restores full six-color output without replacing the entire printer.
